Explanation of HOSA Competitive Events

 

Health Science Events

 

Knowledge Tests. To encourage students to explore and learn about selected health care careers and to assess knowledge in health related areas. Human Growth and Development; Transcultural Healthcare, Medical Law and Ethics;

 

Health Professions Events

 

Clinical Specialty.  To provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in a selected health profession.

 

 

Emergency Preparedness Events

 

 

(LEGAL) Public Health. To encourage students to work as a team to plan and teach others in their community about public health initiatives.

 

 

Leadership Events

Extemporaneous Health Poster. To encourage students to improve their ability to analyze and interpret current health and HOSA-related issues and express and communicate this interpretation through development of a poster.

 

Extemporaneous Writing. To encourage students to improve their ability to express themselves in writing.

 

Healthy Lifestyle. Healthy living reduces the cost of healthcare. Healthcare professionals who practice a healthy lifestyle can be positive role models for their patients and more credible as healthcare experts. For many healthcare professionals, health promotion is a part of their job description. The purpose of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to learn healthy living concepts and apply their learning to a personal healthy lifestyle goal.


Job Seeking Skills. To encourage students to develop and/or refine the skills necessary to apply for and obtain employment.

 

Prepared Speaking. To encourage students to improve their skills in speaking and their ability to organize and present facts (or information) about a topic which is related to a specific theme.

 

Researched Persuasive Speaking. To encourage students to improve their skills in researching a health issue, preparing written documentation supporting a thesis, and presenting information orally.

Teamwork Events

 

 

Biomedical Debate. To provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills in debating a biomedical issue.

 

Health Career Display.  To encourage students to improve their ability to resent themselves and communicate career information to others.

 

Community Awareness. To provide students with the opportunity to:

 

  1. Develop a project to promote community awareness using health issues that may be of local, state, and/or national interest.
  2. Assist communities to become more aware of the pros and cons of the health issue selected.
  3. Promote goodwill and public relations for local HOSA chapters.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the project on the community.

 

Creative Problem Solving. To encourage students to analyze the problem solving process and to work as a team to apply their problem solving skills in creating a solution to a hypothetical healthcare or HOSA-related problem.

 

Health Education. To encourage students to work as a team to plan and teach health-related concepts.

 

Public Service Announcement. To encourage students to analyze the general public’s understanding of a healthcare issue, and to use technology to produce a public service announcement that informs the community about an important healthcare issue.

Recognition Events

Barbara James Service Award. To encourage students to become contributing members of their communities by performing community service projects.

 

Health Care Issues Exam. To encourage students to investigate, analyze and apply their knowledge of current healthcare-related issues.
